WINSTON RILEY 1946 - 2012
It is hard to properly capture everything that Riley contributed to music, but briefly - he formed The Techniques, was instrumental in bringing Jamaican music to Britain and ran one of the best reggae labels, Techniques, where he produced some of the best dancehall to date…including the stalag rhythm.
He is one of the few who made a smooth and prolific transition from 60s and 70s sounds to dancehall.
I know it’s hard to hear Stalag 17 for what it is at this point - its ubiquity and endurance speak to its greatness - but listen. It is pure genius.
